When I started the Leslie Garland Picture Library in 1985 it was the first general picture library in the north east of England. Whereas initially most of the stock was my own work, and much of it was of northern subject matter, since those early days the library has expanded considerably and now has a large range of material supplied by dozens of contributing photographers.
As my background was in civil engineering, inevitably the library has a bias towards things industrial, technological, geological, scientific and of course engineering. However, from this starting point the content of the library stock has moved off into the fields of environment, farming, natural world, geography, pure landscape, historical subjects and travel. It is surprising how the subjects in the world around us interrelate. So yes, we have pictures of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, but we also have shots of rune stones, hanging valleys, Schloss San Souci, the Snowdon Railway and vernier callipers! Do have a look at the “Subject Listing” page, which I hope gives a better idea of the range of subject matter, and of course the pictures, which are but a tiny sample of same.
Technology has moved on a pace in the past few years and so the mode of the library’s operation has also changed and thousands of the library’s images are now available on-line. Although this change is not fully complete just yet, work is continuing at full steam and I am hoping to have the remainder of the library’s stock available in digital form within a year. Our on-line facility is hosted by alamy.com and, as just said, via this thousands of our images are now available 24/7 for on-line search and purchase.
Go on, give it a try! Just hit the “Search” button and you will be taken through to a cyberspace full of pictures!
